David T. Fagan: Twilight’s Breaking Dawn is Brilliant because…

No, I am not a fan of the Twilight series.

No, I have never read a Twilight book.

Yes, I have taken my daughters to the Twilight movies.

What makes Twilight so brilliant is that it never apologizes for how bad it really is … and folks it’s bad, real bad! They are not trying to win any awards or please any critics. They know what their fans want overall, and they give it to them. Sure, their are some fans scratching their heads about the differences in the books versus the films, but there will always be some of that. In the grand scheme of things they’ve created a message-to-market match, and in doing so have made one of the richest movie trilogy empires in all of history.

The good news for you is that you can apply the exact same principals employed by the Twilight movies to benefit your business — no disillusioned, pouty teen vampires required!

Ask yourself…

  • Who is your client?
  • What do they want?
  • What do they need?

Your idea and brand don’t have to be popular to be profitable. We shouldn’t try to make our products and services good for the world; rather we want to make them good for our target market audience.

It’s kind of insane how many marketing and advertising conversations I have where people want to talk about what companies like McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Geico do when it comes to advertising. A small business owner or entrepreneur can rarely leverage a comparison.

We can always learn best practices, but our marketing and advertising has to generate more instant and direct results. We can’t live in a world of broadcasting. Rather we must live in a world of nanocasting.

Ask yourself…

  • Where is my ideal client?
  • Where does my ideal client hang out?
  • Who has a list and a personal relationship with my potential clients?

Tyler Perry understands this as well. He has a niche market, and he understands that niche market. Neither the critics nor the public as a whole are ready to present major awards to these poorly made movies. Yet his profits are through the roof! Tyler has found his market and given them what they want. How about you?
