The Heart Of A Champion

One of my personal assistants forwarded me a voicemail yesterday. It was one of my Mastermind Coaching Group members, letting me know that she had just come home from a week in the hospital after suffering a heart attack.

“Here comes the excuse,” I thought. “Another example of an entrepreneur giving in to their circumstances and giving up on the future of their business and themself.”

I’ve seldom been as pleased to be proven wrong.

As the voicemail played on, the caller went on to explain that because the hospital bills were outrageously huge, she was just calling to let me know that she needed to use a different credit card to make her coaching fee payments going forward.

That was it.

No excuses. No search for pity. Not even a whisper of a hint of a suggestion about some imagined “need” to leave the group. To the contrary, in fact — this sharp entrepreneur knew that challenging circumstances are precisely the times to ramp UP one’s marketing instead of making excuses and accepting failure.

I’m still in awe of the courage, strength and dedication shown by this champion entrepreneur.

I’ve facilitated several high-level Mastermind Coaching Groups over the years, helping dozens of small business owners and entrepreneurs overcome obstacles and implement winning strategies and tactics to transform their businesses and their lives.

And I’ve been given just about as many excuses about why someone wanted to leave – or not even join — the group.

Some had medical issues (although none this serious), some had financial issues (simply because of poor past choices or a lack of current drive to take bold action), some had motivation issues (they lost the drive to improve their income and lifestyle) and some just had their feelings hurt by me or their fellow group members calling them out on their excuses without candy-coating the truth.

But once in a while, someone reminds me why I love entrepreneurs – the ones who fight for their futures and live by one of my favorite credos:

“You can make money or you can make excuses – but you can’t make both.”

Leaders like these are what our great nation is all about. Yesterday, on September 11th, we were reminded of the courageous men and women who gave their lives on that fateful day 11 years ago, and in the wars that followed.

And I was reminded that strong, dedicated entrepreneurs are our nation’s brightest hope for a better future.

I am a firm believer that it’s entrepreneurs who will turn this economy around – not big, entrenched companies or our way-too-big-and-getting-bigger-by-the-minute government.
