The Write Way To Catch Your Big Fish

Over the past couple of months, I’ve shared a step-by-step formula to help you “Catch Your Big Fish” – those ultra-valuable dream clients that can transform your entire career and take you from frustration to jubilation.

Today, we conclude our series.

But first, I’ll share one example of how a business owner took advantage of an opportunity to leverage about one hour of his time into a HUGE deal…

Back in 2009, I published a book titled, “Ultimate Entrepreneur Success Secrets: Inspiring Stories Of Triumph By Chicagoland’s Most Successful Entrepreneurs.” I invited other sharp entrepreneurs to contribute chapters to the book and become co-authors with me.

One of those sharp entrepreneurs was Phil Brakefield, owner of a company that sells promotional items – you know, $1.49 pens, $3.00 t-shirts, etc. You might be thinking, “What kind of ‘Big Fish’ could Phil possibly catch?”

Here’s how Phil tells his story…

Phil Brakefield

“The value of thirty-seven years of experience in my niche business was totally trumped by the results I saw when Steve Sipress offered me the opportunity to be a featured author in his last book. Being a published author immediately catapulted me to expert status, and while breathing that delicious air, HUGE new business came rolling in, including one valued at over $2,000,000! If he does another book, if you have to knock somebody down to get a chapter… DO IT. I’ll see you there!”

Now THAT’s what I call “Catching Your Big Fish!”

And Phil was hardly the only co-author of that book who reaped huge rewards from being a part of it. In fact, every single co-author reported a sizable return on his or her investment.

It just so happens that I am about to publish a sequel to that hugely-successful book, and once again I’m inviting other sharp entrepreneurs to become co-authors with me. This time, I’m even giving each co-author the opportunity to pick their own title and cover design for their book!

Of course, Phil was one of the first to claim one of the limited spots in the book.

Now, onto the final part of our “How To Catch Your Big Fish” series…

In the last post, I explained how to negotiate with your Big Fish and how to nurture and build on the relationships you create through this whole process.

Today we’ll wrap up this series with a discussion about the power your Big Fish has and how to use that for your benefit.

One of the most important aspects of this whole process is “to keep your cheerleader cheering.” I’m referring to the ally you created inside the company, as I covered in last week’s post.

It’s crucial for this person to stay loyal to you in order for you to continue a profitable partnership with your Big Fish. Here are some of the things you can do to keep your Champion going strong:

  • Share the limelight
  • Help them thank their company with new products and services
  • Emotionally connect them to your company
  • Know when to leave them alone
  • Keep your “family” happy
  • Stay on the front lines

Now that you have some ideas of how to build solid relationships, you need to seek out people to build these relationships with. These alliances will help you get Big Fish clients that stay with you forever. You can often get in the door by offering them something they want, such as:

  • Increased power
  • Valuable information
  • A better work experience

Finally, you should consider things that a Big Fish can offer you besides money. These can include the opportunity to…

  • Expand your business
  • Have a learning experience
  • Improve your processes, systems and other means of doing business

These are some of the best ways to keep your alliances going strong and your partnerships fresh and mutually satisfying. Sooner or later, strong alliances inside Big Fish prospects can turn into HUGE deals that benefit everyone involved in a major way.

And that’s my sincere hope for you.

I really blew it the first time around. I fell into the trap of, “I don’t think I can afford to do this.”

Clearly, I should have known better
…and that’s why I already signed up for mine this time around.

    GOOD LUCK knocking ME down!
