“We Don’t Have A Strategy Yet” – Don’t Be That Guy

Last week, President Obama made one of the most irresponsible and shocking statements ever uttered by someone who is supposed to be The Leader Of The Free World.

When asked what strategy The Most Powerful Nation In The History Of Mankind has developed over the months it has closely watched the steady rise to power of The Most Despicable Terrorist Organization Ever (known as “ISIS” or “ISIL” or “IS” or whatever-they’re-calling-themselves-today), President Obama blatantly admitted that “we don’t have a strategy yet” for how to deal with them.

I guess it’s somehow acceptable for the Commander In Chief of The World’s Mightiest Military Force to be totally devoid of strategy, but it’s a recipe for near-certain disaster for the owner of a business.

And yet, of the thousands of business owners, entrepreneurs and sales professionals I’ve met and helped over the past few decades, it is unfortunately extremely common for them to be equally lacking in the area of strategic planning – and therefore choosing to “roll the dice” – especially when it comes to the marketing of their business.

“We’ve tried a few things here and there, but never according to any plan or anything,” is a common lament I hear from disappointed business owners who are confused and unsuccessful at what it takes to grow their business.

Here’s my strong advice to you and to them:

Don’t be that guy.

All signs point to the fact that President Obama despises business in general, and free market capitalism in particular. Now it also appears clear that he has never even come close to running a business of his own.

Unless you are riding out your last couple of years at the helm of your business, bumbling along from crisis to crisis, taking every chance you can to engage in any activity other than actually running your business and just waiting for your term as owner to be over already, YOU, dear reader, know full well that you MUST operate your business with set strategies, plans and systems.

Otherwise, there’s a very good chance yours will be one of the overwhelming majority of businesses that either makes basically no money, or goes out of business — or both.

Having a strategy is most important in the area of marketing, because it’s likely that almost every business owner can handle his or her deliverable (the actual “doing” of the business) fairly well just operating “by the seat of the pants.”

Yet unless you get very lucky, only through the use of an effective marketing strategy can your business bring in the lifeblood of any business: CASH.
